Emergency scare at Capital's airport

EMERGENCY services at Edinburgh Airport were scrambled to the runway yesterday after an in-bound flight reported hydraulic problems as it came into land.

On-site fire engines, medical vehicles and police were immediately notified of the problem when it was relayed to the airport tower just before 8.45am from a Flybe passenger jet on its final approach.

The plane, from Exeter, touched down without difficulty 15 minutes later.

It was not clear what caused the problem, but Flybe said the plane had been inspected by engineers and was cleared to continue its daily flight schedule.

A Flybe spokeswoman said: "Yesterday morning flight BE211 from Exeter to Edinburgh landed without incident or adverse passenger reaction after reporting a minor technical fault.

"In line with standard industry practice, Edinburgh Airport placed emergency services on standby.

"Safety remains Flybe's number one priority and we will always take the necessary precautionary measures to ensure that the safety of our passengers and crew is never compromised."

A spokesman for BAA Scotland, which operates Edinburgh Airport, said: "The in-bound flight notified us of a hydraulic problem, and so our standard procedure is to get all emergency vehicles on site. The crews were stood down after 14 minutes and the plane landed without problem."
