Elderly admitted to hospitals increases by 10,000 over four years
THE number of elderly people admitted to hospitals in Scotland for emergency treatment increased by 10,000 in four years, figures show.
Scottish Conservatives claim emergency admissions among the over-65s increased from 203,000 in 2006-7 to 213,000 in 2009-10.
Health spokeswoman Mary Scanlon said: "There is no doubt that prevention through home care and support is not only less costly than emergency hospital admissions but it is also more effective in providing stable and appropriate care in a person's own home."
A Scottish Government spokeswoman said progress is being made.
