Eight drug arrests at RockNess festival

EIGHT people have been arrested for drug offences at a Highland music festival taking place this weekend.

Northern Constabulary said it had reported the festival-goers in connection with supplying drugs at RockNess where thousands of music fans have gathered to enjoy top acts.

The event in the village of Dores near Inverness is now in its fourth year.

Police overseeing the event said there had been no reports of public disorder, assault or theft.

On-site ambulance staff said they had assisted with 19 cases since Friday.

Chief Superintendent Andy Cowie said: "We are very happy with how the event is going so far with the crowd in good humour and engaging well with our officers on the ground.

"Our intelligence led, proactive approach to drug dealing at the festival has already led to eight people being intercepted both enroute to the festival and within the event, and they have been reported to the procurator fiscal."

Organisers said a total of 35,000 people had gathered for the event which is headlined by The Prodigy, The Flaming Lips and Basement Jaxx.

Earlier this week officers seized a large quantity of drugs believed to be bound for the festival.

Around 200,000-worth of cocaine, ecstasy, amphetamines and cannabis were found in a car on the A9 on Wednesday.

A 22-year-old man was arrested in connection with the haul.

Ian Rideout of the Red Cross said: "It's a really great atmosphere this year.

"The multi-agency safeness tent is providing water, condoms, wet wipes and torches so it's all about enjoying the weekend in the safest way."
