LinkedIn

Free via App Store

Over the past few years LinkedIn has become an essential talking shop, contacts file and job-seeking tool for the more career-minded web user. The only surprising thing about their new iPad app is that it’s taken so long to arrive. Like its iPhone alternative, the app essentially delivers a streamlined, mobile version of the service. As well as updates, groups and profile information, there is also a useful new calendar function to keep track of meetings, and it’s optimised for the new iPad’s Retina display.

Draw Something

£1.49 via App Store

Chances are you’ve already overheard friends or colleagues chatting about the addictive properties of Draw Something, which has taken the mantle of Words with Friends as the most popular social game on the iPad. Like old fashioned Pictionary, the idea is that you have to sketch something, and your friend has to guess what your artistic creation is supposed to be. You can then share your masterpiece on Facebook and Twitter if you feel ready for public criticism.

Flight+

£2.99 via App Store

If you’ve ever turned up at the airport to collect someone, only to find their plane is still sitting on the tarmac 3,000 miles away, this is the app for you. Flight+ has practical uses (you can track any flight in the world in real time, survey seat maps and receive push notifications on schedule changes), but this is equally a powerful new opiate for aeronautic nerds and failed air traffic controllers everywhere.

National Geographic Today

Free via App Store

Wannabe explorers can satisfy their adventurous tendencies with this new app from renowned magazine National Geographic. Making great use of the iPad’s pin-sharp resolution, this daily instalment of the natural world offers dazzling photography and videos, as well as insightful articles and challenging quizzes.

Burnout CRASH!

£2.99 via App Store

As far as gaming concepts go, the Burnout franchise isn’t exactly up there with chess. But if you’re looking to let your brain recharge after a long day, this new release from Electronic Arts could be the answer. As ever, the aim of the game is to crash your car and unleash as much damage as possible, but the new game comes with more daft extras (care to unleash a tornado sir?) than ever.
