TENNENT Caledonian brewery is offering 16 to 24-year-olds working in the leisure industry places on its “modern apprenticeship plus” scheme.

Courses include beer and cellar management, a Wine & Spirit Education Trust intermediate wine qualification and a professional bartenders City & Guilds.

Awards in professional cookery and training in licence retail operations are also on offer.

The initiative also offers work experience and mentoring from senior figures in the drinks and hospitality industry, both within Tennent Caledonian and its partner businesses.

Trade visits will provide a behind-the-scenes look at the brewery and a broad industry insight at alcohol production in whisky distilleries, cider mills and vineyards.

Funded and managed by Tennent Caledonian with support from Skills Development Scotland, apprenticeship applications are now open and courses will begin in September.

Glasgow Central MP Anas Sarwar said the scheme “is a good example of a Scottish business pioneering within their industry and delivering world-class ideas and opportunities”.

He said: “Not only will this bring great individual reward for each of the apprentices who are lucky enough to take part but the MAP (modern apprenticeship plus) programme sees Tennent’s making an important investment into their industry and the future vitality and success of pubs, bars and many other outlets around the country, as these enhanced skills filter through over the years.”

Steve Annand, commercial managing director of Tennent Caledonian, said: “Our industry is already packed with talented young people and the MAP will recognise the very best and give them a fantastic boost for their careers, whatever area of our business they hope to succeed in.

“We are also very excited that Tennent Caledonian will be taking an active role in the mentorship programme, and I’m hopeful that the activities we have planned will give invaluable insight into how the beer business works at every level.”
