Students down to Waterfront for week of consultancy work

SIX pupils from Edinburgh's Broughton High School have spent a week working as consultants at the Granton headquarters of regeneration agency Waterfront Edinburgh Ltd.

The teenagers, who conducted market research to identify possible uses for three commercial units in the area, discovered the community would like a restaurant and bar for WEL's Granton Harbour Road C development, as well as a hairdresser, beauty salon and sports facility.

The research found that more than 70 per cent of people surveyed would use the facilities. The regeneration agency recently applied for outline planning permission for a 200-bedroom hotel at the site on West Shore Road, as well as a small provision of housing and commercial units.

The research also established that almost 30 per cent of residents and 20 per cent of workers' preferred choice for retail provision was a hairdressers and beauty salon. Around 45 per cent said leisure facilities should take the form of a sports facility rather than a pool or casino.

The group was led by 17-year-old project co-ordinator, Amanda Hatchivadi of Wardie.
