Scotsman Archive: Scots forests, 10 December, 1949

PLANS are in preparation for dealing with some 200,000 acres of Scottish forests under which private woodlands are "dedicated" by the owners. This represent about a quarter of the undisputed private forest lands of Scotland.

These facts were given by Sir Henry Beresford-Peirse, Director of Forestry for Scotland, last night when he described the work of the Forestry Commission to the Edinburgh and East of Scotland Regional Group of the Institute of Public Administration. Asked whether this was a reasonable proportion, Sir Henry said he thought it was. It was the kind of scheme which owners wanted to look at from all angles. He described the formation of the Forestry Commission 30 years ago and the changes between the wars as well as the effects of the recent war which led to the 1945 Act and the vastly accelerated planting scheme. There was a satisfactory amount of devolution as far as Scotland was concerned and within Scotland there was devolution "all the way down the chain".
