Scotsman Archive: 5 October, 2000: McLeish admits need for exam supremo
AN examinations tsar may be appointed to oversee the delivery of school qualifications in Scotland to prevent a repeat of the chaos surrounding this year's results.
Henry McLeish, the enterprise minister, told a parliamentary inquiry into the affair that an exam supremo could work as an intermediary between the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) and the education minister to guarantee the quality of the exam results. Mr McLeish said: "We could have an examinations tsar to make sure that the quality assurance systems would be properly functioning."
His comments came during a hearing of the enterprise and lifelong learning committee, which also took evidence from Sam Galbraith, the education minister. At a separate education committee inquiry into the debacle, MSPs heard the executive's moves to implement Higher Still compared to the Westminster government's Millennium Dome.
