Pupils put best feet forward
A RECORD number of Scottish councils have signed up for National Walk To School Week.
Twenty are taking part in this week's event, which involves more than a million pupils across the UK promoting an alternative to the "school run".
Keith Irving, the Edinburgh-based spokesman for the pedestrian charity Living Streets, said: "I welcome the work of all the local authorities and schools, especially Scottish Borders Council, who aim to have nearly 8,000 pupils from 48 primary schools taking part this year, while Falkirk Council is planning a mass walk to school on 22 May as part of their 1.4 million sustainable travel town project."
He believed the increased uptake was due to health and environmental reasons – and so pupils could spend more time with their friends.
