Pupils' efforts raise cash for camping trip

PUPILS at a city primary school have been raising money to help fund their trip to a residential camp.

The primary six and seven pupils at Victoria Primary have been working hard to come up with hundreds of pounds so they can go to camp in March at Dalguise in Perthshire.

The Newhaven pupils raised 588 by bag-packing at Asda, 134 through carol singing at Ocean Terminal and Asda, and they also ran an Aztec caf and made 52.

In addition, they have written to local businesses and organisations and have so far received donations from St Serf's Church, Newhaven Church and caf, North Leith Church and Chancelot Mill.

Head teacher Laura Thomson said: "School camps cost a lot of money and many families find it difficult to find the money, particularly during the current financial climate.

"It's also important for children to have the responsibility for raising funds themselves and many of the ideas for fundraising came from them.

"We are a small school in the heart of a very supportive community and we look forward to working even more closely with our community and business partners in 2009."
