Nursery nurse reaches final of UK contest
A NURSERY nurse from the Capital has come second in a UK-wide competition, despite leaving school unable to read or write.
Gina Gorman, who is heavily dyslexic, was runner up in the Nursery Nurse of the Year finals, run by the UK Early Years Educator National Awards.
She has struck up a rapport with youngsters at Forbes Children's Nursery, in Bruntsfield, where she is trying to make sure children receive a better start in life than she did.
Ms Gorman said: "I couldn't read and write when I left school - I couldn't even read the destinations on buses - and I'm over the moon that after a lot of work encouraged by my employers and colleagues I can manage as well if not better than the next person."
She started working at the nursery three years ago and has since attained her Scottish Progression Award, the minimum qualification needed to become a registered nursery assistant, and completed her SQ3 three months ahead of schedule.
