New 'too small' schools get green light
A CONTROVERSIAL contract for £100 million to build nine schools has been signed.
However, some parents have expressed fears the replacement buildings, in Dumfries and Galloway will be too small, and that children would need to be taught in makeshift classrooms.
Castle Douglas Primary School, which has 13 classrooms, is to be replaced by a building with only 11, despite a growing roll. Construction of the schools is due to start early this year, with the first new building completed in 2009.
Philip Jones, Dumfries and Galloway Council chief executive, said: "Throughout this process, council members have maintained a consistent focus on achieving a major improvement in school provision."
The new schools are Wallace Hall Primary and Secondary in Thornhill; Castle Douglas Primary; Kirkcudbright Primary; Moffat School; Lockerbie Primary and Secondary; and two new primaries in Dumfries – Heathhall and the replacement of St Andrew's RC.
Stranraer Academy will be refurbished as part of the project.
