Musical instrument lesson fees scrapped

Midlothian Council has become one of the first local authorities in Scotland to scrap charges for instrumental music tuition for students sitting Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA)exams.

At present, the 642 secondary pupils who receive music tuition – including 250 taking SQA courses – have to pay for the classes they receive. Abolishing charges will mean a reduction in income for the council’s arts and creativity team of around £37,500.

Councillor Lisa Beattie, cabinet member for education, said: “We are determined to protect access to music tuition for as many children as possible and this continues to be a priority.”
