MSPs: Children being failed by lack of PE

CHILDREN in Scotland are receiving too little physical education because of a "lamentable" failure by authorities, MSPs said yesterday.

Successive governments, councils, the education inspectorate and schools were all criticised by the Scottish Parliament's health committee. A target set in 2004 by the then Scottish Executive for all youngsters to receive two hours of PE a week has been missed.

The report accused education authorities of implementing the policy in "half-hearted" fashion, and complained of the "wholly unsatisfactory" way Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Education has monitored performance. This has resulted in parents and politicians not being informed of the standard of PE in schools, said the committee, chaired by SNP back-bencher MSP Christine Grahame.

The publication said that according to evidence from HMIE, only a third of 237 primary schools inspected were providing youngsters at each stage with two hours PE a week in 2008.
