Mental illness gene is found

SCIENTISTS in Edinburgh have found a gene that may help explain the cause of mental illness.

Researchers have found that the gene – ABCA13 – is partially inactive in patients with severe mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and depression.

Identifying the correct genes could lead to better treatments .

The international team of scientists, led by the University of Edinburgh, studied the genes of some 2,000 psychiatric patients and compared them to 2,000 healthy people.
