Funding for Holocaust education project
The Scottish Government has renewed funding to educate schoolchildren about the horrors of the Holocaust.
Dr Alastair Allan, minister for learning, said the government would provide £230,000 to allow 380 students from schools and colleges across Scotland to take part in the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Lessons from Auschwitz programme in 2012-13.
Young people take part in a one-day visit to the former concentration camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau where they hear from a Holocaust survivor.
Dr Allan said: “I had the opportunity to travel to Auschwitz with a group of Scottish young people in November and take part in this thought-provoking and moving experience.
“We are providing £230,000 to enable around 380 Scottish students to participate in the project in 2012-13 and to help ensure that the disturbing and profoundly important lessons from the past are passed on.”
