Fort Primary closure 'would save £6.5m'

EDUCATION bosses today revealed that they expect to save more than £6.5 million if Fort Primary is closed.

The Leith school is one of four currently facing the axe, with their future to be decided a week today.

Original figures showed that closing Fort would bring in the least savings out of the four schools. However, bosses have now come up with a plan for the future use of the building.

Council chiefs say they could save 855,000 per year in running costs by closing the school and using it as a central base for teams of children and families. In addition, more than 5.6m could be made from selling buildings.

A council spokesman said: "If plans to close Fort are agreed then we think we can use the building to generate a large sum of money."

But Vikki Spence, of the Fighting for Fort campaign, said: "They are just trying to make their option for closing the school sound better."
