City honours engineer who changed Japan
THE Scottish engineer who designed Japan's first skyscraper was set to be commemorated in the Capital today.
William Kinninmond Burton, who died in 1899, was due to have a bench unveiled in his memory at Edinburgh Napier University's Craighouse Campus, which is the garden he grew up beside.
Burton is celebrated in Japan to this day for designing clean water systems for its cities, helping to eradicate disease and transform it into a leading industrial nation. He was also responsible for designing its first skyscraper.
Today's event marks the 110th anniversary of his death. Delegates from Japan were set to join Lord Provost George Grubb and Councillor Rob Munn.
