Call for quality control on school meals

THE Scottish Government should act on the quality of school meals after it emerged councils spend wildly differing amounts on pupils’ food.

Green MSP Alison Johnstone found that some authorities spend as much as £5.29 per meal, while others spend less than £2.

Trade union Unison said recent scares showed not enough is being done to control quality in school meals. The average cost per meal is £2.83, but the three island councils spend £5.29 and Aberdeenshire Council £1.68.

Ms Johnstone said: Amid the horsemeat scandal, warnings about processed meats shortening lives and rocketing levels of diabetes we cannot put a gloss on this issue any longer.”
