£9,000 fees give mixed results for universities

TWO of Scotland’s leading universities have reported mixed results after introducing fees of up to £9,000 a year for students from elsewhere in the UK.

St Andrews University said it expected to see a “modest decrease” in RUK (rest of UK) applications, of up to 5 per cent, while Edinburgh said early indications showed applications were up.

Both universities have opted to charge students from England, Wales and Northern Ireland fees of £9,000 a year, meaning a degree from Edinburgh or St Andrews will be the most expensive in the UK. Scottish students will remain exempt.

A spokesman for St Andrews said: “On application trends, we anticipate a modest decrease in RUK applications of up to 5 per cent, an increase in Scottish applications of over 20 per cent, rest of EU of over 45 per cent and overseas of over 20 per cent. Overall, we expect applications to St Andrews to have grown by approximately 12 per cent.”

An Edinburgh University spokesman said: “Early indications suggest applications are up from all countries of the UK except Northern Ireland, compared to last year.”

This one is a real orphan. I could add that the 9000 quid fee will concentrate the mind, or do you feel that it should remain the status quo to encourage students to take three times the normal length of time for a degree and allow them, when the inspiration takes them, to revolt. Revolting students are not nice to see.

Has anyone lost out of producing quality rather than quantity. Well other than political parties. It may sound harsh that the rest of the Eu can get their students in free, but they have not been accepted yet, eh! The Universities have the charge to produce the Nation's elite. I would also transfer Bachelor of Art students to the Engineering Universities. not only would it introduce a better work ethic but encourage them to use CNC machines to produce masterpieces that could possibly have a commercial value. A lot better than making the real money after you are dead.
