Edinburgh shoplifters left on the shelves as crime cracked

SHOPLIFTING offences in the city centre have dropped by 20 per cent over the last year following the introduction of a project aimed at tackling retail crime.

More than 150 city centre retailers have signed up to Check Out, which was launched by Essential Edinburgh and Lothian and Borders Police around 18 months ago.

Between April 2010 and January 2011, a total of 555 thefts from shops were made in the city centre Business Improvement District (BID), compared with 697 during the same period the year before - a 20 per cent decrease.

A total of 21 shoplifting offences were committed in the city centre BID in January this year alone.

The project uses technology to share real-time information amongst retailers.

Liz McAreavey, acting chief executive of Essential Edinburgh, said the project had played an important role in slashing retail crime.
