Speeding motorist jailed over takeaway driver's death

A MOTORIST whose dangerous driving caused the death of a Hungarian immigrant who came to Scotland for a 'better life' has been jailed for three and a half years.

Finlayson was sentenced at the High Court.

Eric Finlayson, 59, was behind the wheel of his Vauxhall Moka when it collided on January 1 2016 with a Ford Fusion being driven by takeaway driver David Gaspar. The High Court in Edinburgh heard how in the moments before the collision, Finlayson was driving at 65 miles per hour in a 30 miles per hour zone.

Mr Gaspar, who was being helped by a 13-year-old boy, was driving in Edinburgh’s Sighthill area when Finlayson’s vehicle struck Mr Gaspar’s car injuring his passenger. The 20-year-old Hungarian sustained a serious head injury. Medics at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary were unable to save him and he died on January 11.

Judge Lord Boyd told Finlayson he had no other option but to send him to prison. He added: “This was a young man who had his life ahead of him.”
