EC cedes control over GM

THE European Commission has handed back power to national governments, allowing them to decide the future of genetically modified crops.

The rare move acknowledges that the controversy over GMOs - genetically modified organisms - is too complicated to impose one rule on 27 countries.

Conservative MEPs welcomed the decision, which still needs approval from EU governments with widely differing views on the use of GMOs, but environmental campaigners reacted with dismay, accusing the commission of giving up control.
