Early-warning homelessness system hailed
CAMPAIGNERS have welcomed a new early-warning system to help prevent people becoming homeless because of repossession or eviction.
Under Section 11 of the Homelessness (Scotland) Act, landlords and creditors must inform the relevant local authorities when they raise proceedings for possession of a property, or serve certain notices relating to a mortgage.
Its aim is to ensure local authorities are given warning of residents who risk losing their home.
Director of Shelter Scotland, Graeme Brown, said: "Recent figures showing a rise in the number of people applying as homeless because of mortgage default or rent arrears make Section 11 even more important."
