Dying nurse 'wished well'

THE FAMILY of an Edinburgh midwife have hit out at health bosses who wrote to wish her a happy retirement – just a day before she died.

Iain Martin, 49, was left stunned by the letter from NHS Lothian as wife Brenda, 47, lay on her deathbed.

Mrs Martin – who cared for Prime Minister Gordon Brown's tragic daughter Jennifer – lost her five-year battle with bowel and liver cancer last week.

The midwife's family have now written to NHS Lothian to complain about the letter, which wished Mrs Martin a "long, happy and fulfilling retirement."

Mike Grieve, the health board's director of delivery, said: "We are deeply sorry for any upset caused."
