Dunblane fans keep the faith and know Andy Murray's day will come

SUPPORTERS in Andy Murray's hometown of Dunblane yesterday expressed confidence they will not be denied the chance to celebrate his success in a Grand Slam for much longer.

Despite his defeat at the hands of Roger Federer, the 22-year-old's fans praised his performance, and said it is only a matter of time before he is rewarded.

About 150 people gathered in the town's community centre early yesterday morning to cheer on the Scot, with an array of banners offering messages of support.

One of those in attendance, David Marshall, the chief executive of Tennis Scotland, said positives could be taken from the result.

He added: "I thought Andy played very well today. The main thing you're looking at is the world's number one player – the best player the world has ever seen – playing at the top of his game.

"There's plenty of Slams to aim for, and I'm sure Andy will be back stronger than ever."

Murray's father, Willie, who watched the game at home, admitted that his son "will be gutted" for a few days, but will soon be back in contention. "He'll know that he met Federer at his best, but that's what he wanted – to take on the very best, and win, and he will. I'm sure of it," the 54-year-old said.

Daniel Pope, 78, said: "I used to play tennis in Stirling with Andy's gran and grandad Shirley and Roy Erskine, 50 years ago, so I was desperate for Andy to win.

"He played so well, but Federer was just too good on the day, but every time he plays at that level is more experience and one day soon he's going to win a Grand Slam."

Ian Conway, who captained the north of Scotland county side which featured a surprise appearance by Murray last summer, said: "Let's not underestimate Andy. This is his second Slam final in the past year-and-a-half. Federer has played 22 and won 16.

"Today for tennis in Scotland we must celebrate – it's only a matter of time before Andy delivers a Slam."

Tom McLean, landlord of the Dunblane Hotel, said: "He tried his best against the best player ever."
