Drums, drams and a cow: Scots bound for the empty plinth
THEY shall sip whisky, flaunt tartan, bang the drums and dress as a cow. Scotland's representatives to occupy the empty fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square were revealed yesterday, as were their plans on how to spend an hour on public display.
As part of the One and Other installation designed by the artist Anthony Gormley, the plinth in the centre of London will be occupied by a different person for one hour each, 24 hours a day for 100 days beginning on 6 July.
The first 615 participants announced yesterday include 53 Scots, who will take their place during July. The group includes Violet Dalton, 55, a head of volunteering from Edinburgh, who will wear tartan on the plinth, while Neil Scott, 23, a Perthshire learning support assistant, will do a drawing.
Others include Graham Clark, 49, an Edinburgh photographer who plans to play the drums, and Paul Scofield, 25, a Paisley engineer who will dress as a cow. Others will bring whisky and toast London.
Each person can spend their allotted hour as they wish: they can perform, demonstrate or simply reflect.
