Drop-out rate hits a 7-year low
THE student drop-out rate at Scottish universities has fallen to its lowest level for seven years, but remains the highest in the UK, figures showed yesterday.
A total of 9.3 per cent of undergraduates - including mature students - north of the Border failed to reach second year in 2009-10, compared with 7.8 per cent in England, 7.4 per cent in Wales and 9 per cent in Northern Ireland.
The Scottish figure is down from 9.9 per cent in 2008-9 and is the third consecutive annual reduction. The Higher Education Statistics Agency figures also showed ten of Scotland's 18 universities exceeded their expected drop-out rates.
Worst was the University of the Highlands and Islands Millennium Institute at 28.6 per cent. Glasgow School of Art had the lowest rate, just 3 per cent. The National Union of Students called the figures "shameful", attributing the falling rate to more students staying on because of the recession.
