Drink course for offenders
DRUNKEN offenders will escape police fines if they agree to attend an alcohol programme as part of a new scheme.
Binge drinkers are being targeted by Fife Constabulary who want to reduce alcohol-fuelled crime. Half of all incidents reported last year concerned antisocial behaviour, usually involving drink, according to police.
Under the Alcohol Diversion scheme, offenders in Kirkcaldy will be given the opportunity to avoid a 40 fine by attending an education programme on the dangers of alcohol misuse. The classes will be run by Fife Alcohol Support Services.
If successful, the six-month pilot may be extended. Assistant Chief Constable Andrew Barker said: "Antisocial behaviour and low-level crimes contribute to a wider fear of crime within our Fife communities."
