'Don't send soldiers gifts'
THE Ministry of Defence has urged well-wishers to think twice before sending a Christmas box to troops based in Afghanistan.
The MoD warns that the military's mail delivery system may be overtaxed by too many parcels. Instead of making individual purchases and sending them to Afghanistan, the department advises people to work with specified charities that can provide practical gifts to the soldiers.
Officials said yesterday they appreciate the public's goodwill gestures but don't want perishables like chocolates to be sent to the front lines.
They also warn that gifts sent to soldiers by their families will be delayed if officials are coping with a lot of packages.
