Doctor 'found with Ecstasy, cannabis and speed'
A DOCTOR was caught at a music festival with a haul of drugs in his car, a professional disciplinary panel heard yesterday.
Dr Fraser Gibb, 41, told police who stopped him at the Wickerman music festival in Dumfries and Galloway he had no illegal substances.
But the tribunal heard he had 14 Ecstasy tablets, 2g of amphetamine and 3g of cannabis resin.
He was convicted at Kirkcudbright Sheriff Court of possessing Ecstasy at the event in Dundrennan in July 2006 and was fined 400.
A General Medical Council (GMC) fitness to practise hearing was told the locum consultant psychiatrist at Crichton Royal Hospital in Dumfries failed to disclose the drugs when quizzed by officers.
Robin Kitching, counsel for the GMC, said Dr Gibb was stopped in his silver Hyundai by an officer at the festival entrance. He denied having any drugs but when police searched his car they found the pills, powder and resin in a black case on the back seat.
He was cautioned and later arrested when he confirmed the drugs were for his own use.
The panel, sitting in Manchester, was told he denied sourcing drugs from his workplace and did not use other banned substances such as cocaine.
The panel will also investigate claims Dr Gibb did not give his full name and address to officers at the festival. He denies those allegations.
Dr Gibb was suspended on full pay by his employer, NHS Dumfries and Galloway, following the incident.
There was no evidence he had neglected his patients and he was said to be generally well thought of by colleagues, Mr Kitching said.
