Dial up McCall Smith's Mma Ramotswe via an iPhone app

Fans of author Alexander McCall Smith can now keep up to date with his work thanks to the launch of a dedicated app.

The Alexander McCall Smith iPhone app includes a random quote generator and the chance for readers to immerse themselves in the world of one of his most-loved characters, Mma Precious Ramotswe of The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency.

It includes video interviews, character portraits, location guides and chapter samples, and has been launched alongside the paperback of The Double Comfort Safari Club.

It will be updated for each new book released this year, including the Saturday Big Tent Wedding Party in March, and new releases from the Scotland Street, Corduroy Mansions and Sunday Philosophy Club series later in the year.

Fans of the Merchiston-based author will also have the chance to enjoy a performance of The Okovango Macbeth at the Queen's Hall in April. The author wrote the libretto for the piece, which sees Macbeth played out among a troop of baboons in Botswana.

It will be staged by soloists from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and musicians from Mr McFall's Chamber on April 20.
