Delay in referrals to St John's
PLANS to tell patients in the west of the city to use St John's Hospital instead of the Western General have been delayed.
Health chiefs said the controversial "rezoning" proposals had been put on ice because they are "politically sensitive", despite the Scottish Government urging progress on the scheme.
Announced towards the end of last year, the idea was to get GPs in areas like Blackhall, South Gyle and Colinton to refer patients to the Livingston hospital, even if in some cases the Western was walking distance from their home.
Health chiefs said this would help ease the strain on the ERI and the Western while maximising the facilities at St John's by about three patients a day.
But a recent NHS Lothian board meeting was told that the proposals were "subject to satisfactory resolution of public transport and social work obstacles identified by the patients and public".
