Deer not the only deadly hazard

THE biggest danger to drivers on Scotland's unfenced roads is not deer but sheep and cattle ('As cute as Bambi, but deer pose road death time bomb,' January 11). If we had a Sheep or Cow commission would farm animals be shot for straying near roads? Shooting deer is not the solution as other deer will just move in to take advantage of the good grazing on roadside verges.

While there is legislation to ensure that Network Rail fence off our railways to keep animals off the tracks, there are no similar laws to make road authorities, land owners or farmers erect fences to keep livestock off our roads.

It would be very expensive to erect deer fences along all our roads, but they could be installed in known problem areas.
