The 35-year-old was taken to hospital for treatment but died a short time later, police said.

His family have been informed.

Officers had earlier said the death was suspicious but a murder investigation was launched after a post mortem this afternoon.

Another man was also injured in the disturbance and remains in hospital where staff describe his condition as stable.

Police closed off parts of Mayfield Road today as forensic officers scoured grass, undergrowth and bins in the area.

Detective Inspector David Moran said: “The investigation is at an early stage and officers are conducting inquiries in the surrounding area to establish what happened.

“I would appeal to anyone who witnessed the incident or who has any information that could assist us with our enquiries to contact police via the non-emergency number 101.

“Alternatively you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
