Deal struck for new sex clinic
A DEAL has been struck between NHS Lothian and a contractor to build the new one-stop sex clinic.
Stirling-based Ogilvie Construction will be tasked with developing the 9 million project, which will involve the restoration of parts of the old Chalmers Hospital at Lauriston.
The centre will be the first of its kind in the UK, meaning patients can be tested, diagnosed and treated in the same place for a range of different sexually-transmitted diseases.
Dr Gordon Scott, the health board's lead clinician for service redesign, said: "Our new one-stop sexual health service will deliver a seamless service for the public, where, for example, patients attending GUM clinics can receive contraceptive advice during the same consultation.
"At present, both services are provided from different places, making it less convenient."
The facility should be ready by 2011 and will have the capacity to deal with 50,000 patients a year.
