Dance review: The Sugar Dandies
THE SUGAR DANDIES: LADIES NOT REQUIRED C (VENUE 34)
WINNING the award for campest show at the Fringe outright, the Sugar Dandies are a same-sex ballroom-dancing couple, with a spring in their step and a story on their lips.
Together with our amiable, and equally camp host, Philip Rescorla, dancers Bradley and Soren Stauffer-Kruse (they're married) introduce us to their whirlwind life: their childhood experiences of dance (not good), how they met at a gay men's chorus convention and how, after years of slog, they now fill their time with ballroom-dancing competitions.
With a disco ball shining down upon them, the two men are the epitome of glamour. Shimmying off to change their costumes every few minutes, while Rescorla holds the fort with his brand of deliciously lame comedy, they reappear in an assortment of sequins and shiny shoes, ready to dazzle us with a foxtrot, waltz or tango. The pink French poodle outfit really must be seen to be believed.
This is a sweet, witty show that won't set the world on fire, but may well spark a few flames of ambition in other fleet-footed would-be dancers.
