D-Day hero is immortalised in bronze
A BRITISH war hero who braved a storm of bullets to pipe his regiment ashore at Normandy on D-Day will be honoured with a statue – built and paid for by the French.
The statue of Bill Millin, 86, will be erected close to the spot where he played a key role as Allied troops launched their assault.
The 1st Special Service Brigade veteran, who was the personal piper of Lord Lovat, now lives in a nursing home in Dawlish, Devon, and travelled to Normandy at the weekend to commemorate the 65th D-Day anniversary
The statue, in Colleville Montgomery, will feature Mr Millin in full military regalia.
He said: "It is a great honour. I wanted it to be as lifelike as possible so I'm sending a photograph of myself to the mayor."
