Cuts 'create false divide'

PLANS by the UK Government to cut welfare are based on a lack of understanding of the poor, churches have said.

The Church of Scotland and other Christian organisations welcomed moves to simplify the benefit system, but said reforms were based on inaccurate assumptions about the poor and implied they were lazy or work-shy.

Rev Ian Galloway, convener of the Kirk's church and society council, said: "The government is creating a false divide between the affluent and poor."
