Peeping Tom, Le Jardin Compiled By Teri Laing
The combination of a dark, sensual film and a tense, moving dance performance makes for a magnetic combination in this unique dance-theatre project from the former members of Les Ballets C de la B.
The film sequences - shot in a sultry African nightclub in Brussels - feature an array of characters including Rika Esser, 62cm tall and spokeswoman for Little People of Germany. The club is a melting pot of all kinds of people: artists, African politicians, a pit bull as well as a flamenco-singing Chihuahua and a stealing, dancing magpie. The film represents one night of this microcosm, a life that is hidden while another goes on outside.
In the dance performance, a new reality begins. Some characters from the dream-like film turn up again, but in a different context and another surrounding, separated from their neighbours by four hedges, in their own closed world.
Between the frolics of the characters a weird inner void is experienced - the void of a man looking back at his life - which results in a moving monologue performed by a pitiful old man who has lost everything and calls helplessly for attention. This inspiring performance by Gabriela Carrizo and Franck Chartier is not be missed.
