Crash survivor agrees with Princess Diana verdict
TREVOR Rees, the sole survivor of the car crash which killed Diana, Princess of Wales, said today he agreed with the jury's verdict and hoped everyone involved could "move on".
Mr Rees, who suffered horrific facial injuries in the Paris car smash, was praised last night by Diana's sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, for giving evidence to the inquest.
He said in a brief statement: "I agree with the jury's verdict, and welcome the end of the inquest process. I hope that this now represents a point from which everyone involved can move on."
Mr Rees' comments echoed a statement issued by William and Harry last night in which they said they agreed with the jury's verdict that Diana and her lover Dodi Fayed died because of gross negligence by both their driver Henri Paul and pursuing paparazzi.
Dodi's father, Mohamed al Fayed, has never accepted, despite compelling evidence, that Mr Paul – his employee – was drink-driving, choosing to believe the crash was plotted by the Duke of Edinburgh and MI6.
Mr al Fayed's spokesman, Michael Cole, immediately responded to Mr Rees's comments, saying that the Harrods boss also wanted to "move on" but was nevertheless meeting his legal team today to examine his options.
He added: "Of course we all want to move on but I think there can be no untied up loose ends, but all we're doing today is trying to see if there is anything more that can be done."
