Council chiefs investigate claims of house repair fraud

COUNCIL chiefs in Edinburgh are investigating claims a contractor was given access to a computer system to help it outbid rivals for millions of pounds worth of housing repairs.

A fraud probe into the council's property services department is said to have uncovered allegations that at least one senior official disclosed a database password to help pass on details of lucrative contracts.

The ten-month probe, which has already led to the suspension of six members of staff, is thought to have been widened because of concerns that many home-owners have been billed for work that was never done, unnecessary work that was carried out or extra repairs carried out without permission.

The council has admitted it is investigating allegations that are potentially "of a very serious nature". A spokesman said: "The council has commissioned an independent investigation into a wide range of matters relating to the property conservation service."
