Council chiefs defend rise in £100k salaries
SCOTLAND'S highest-paid council officers have been forced to defend the record level of six-figure salaries they earned last year.
New figures have revealed that 107 senior council officers earned more than 100,000 in 2008-9. This compares with just 89 last year and 14 in 2002-3.
Fife had the most six-figure earners with 14, and only four councils – Clackmannanshire, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (Western Isles), Orkney and Shetland had nobody taking home more than 100,000.
But the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives (Solace) said the enormous salaries were justified even in the middle of a recession.
David Clark, of Solace, said his members carried out "big jobs requiring people of real talent". He added: "The average Scottish council, for example, employs 8,900 people. If that was a private-sector job, they would be paid two times that income."
