Conflict blamed for authority's lack of progress

POLITICAL conflict and infighting is holding back progress at a local authority, a report revealed today.

The criticism was levelled at West Dunbartonshire Council more than a year after a series of recommendations were drawn up to improve services.

The Accounts Commission said councillors' behaviour has at times "fallen short of expectations". Chairman John Baillie said: "We believe the lack of progress is because the relationships between councillors and the nature of the political conflict among councillors are having a negative effect on the operation and development of the council.

"Councillors across the political spectrum have not demonstrated the corporate leadership required."

The council has 22 elected members, including the minority SNP administration, Labour, Scottish Socialist Party and four independents.
