Concern over HIV case rise
MORE than 5,000 sexually transmitted diseases were contracted in the Lothians last year, figures have shown.
The new analysis of all STDs shows that Edinburgh remains the HIV capital of Scotland by a long way.
More men than women attended GUM clinics to be diagnosed in 2008, with chlamydia remains the most common infection.
However, it is the rise in cases of HIV – almost always in gay men – which is causing health chiefs the most concern.
In 2008 there were 42 new cases of the disease, more than were being recorded during the notorious drug-fuelled epidemic of the 1980s.
