Community News: Townhouse plans for B&B get go-ahead

PLANS to redevelop a city bed and breakfast into a luxury townhouse have been given the go-ahead by the council's planning committee.

Work is to be carried out on The Adelphi Guest House on Links Gardens to split the building into two dwellings.

The lower floor of the terraced building will be converted into a two-bed basement flat while the ground and upper floors will become a five-bed house.

On your marks to secure place in marathon

ENTRIES are open for next year's Edinburgh Marathon.

The 2011 Edinburgh Marathon Festival, which is being sponsored by Oxfam, will incorporate several races on the weekend of May 21-22.

On the Saturday there will be a 10km, 5km and junior race, while Sunday will host the marathon, half marathon and team relay.

Organisers are expecting over 30,000 entrants. Last year's marathon attracted thousands of runners, but was marred by the death of one of the entrants.

Pilrig pupils pick up potato prize

PUPILS at Pilrig Park School in Edinburgh are celebrating being crowned Scotland's winner of the Potato Council's Grow Your Own Potatoes competition.

The children harvested 2.9kg of rocket potatoes. In recognition of their success the school will receive a playground bench.

Bands battle for music title

SOME of the most promising bands and artists in Scotland will battle it out in a live city music competition.

The musicians will be competing to win the coveted Music2Be title whilst also picking up a 1000 prize.

The festival is on September 25 at The Yard in Bonnington Road Lane.

Roof repairs at bus station

AROUND 60,000 of refurbishing work is to be carried out on Edinburgh Bus Station's ceiling.

The city council has advertised the contract for the work, which is set to begin next month.

The work, on ventilation systems and electrical wiring, will be carried out through the night.

School gets in step at dance workshops

PUPILS at the city's Hermitage Park Primary School will get the chance to dance with world-renowned choreographer Alonzo King today.

Mr King will lead dance workshops at a number of schools this week following the Alonzo King Lines Ballet production of Dust and Light/Rasa at the Edinburgh International Festival.

The San Francisco-based choreographer will inspire youngsters with his contemporary classical-style choreography.
