Community News: Record shop marks 21st anniversary

A CULT record shop in the city is to celebrate its 21st anniversary.

Backtracks on Brougham Street has clung on to business through the rise of CDs and the internet, and continues to trade.

Owner Tommy Robertson said a loyal customer base and being able to adjust with the times have helped the outlet survive.

He said: "We have to work really hard and come up with new things.

"I still believe people like buying a record and having it in their hand."

Free advice on all types of shooting equipment

FREE advice on modern and vintage shooting equipment is being offered to people in Edinburgh.

Sporting Gun specialist Gavin Gardiner will be giving advice and free auction valuations of all types of sporting guns and rifles, as well as shooting accessories, guncases and related items.

Mr Gardiner said: "The market remains very strong for fine and unusual items, with record prices continuing to be paid."

The event will be held at Sotheby's on October 27.

Fashion show for child helpline

The NSPCC's Children's Helpline is to benefit from a fashion show arranged by clothing store Meloosha to celebrate its first anniversary. The event on October 28 will be at St George's Church in Shandwick Place from 6.30pm. Tickets 5 from the Alva Street shop, or on 0131 225 3198.

Hopetoun House walk

Rangers at Hopetoun House will lead an autumn walk around the grounds on Saturday. Booking is required for the walk, which runs from 2pm to 3.30pm. The cost is 3.70 for adults and 2.20 for children, including coffee. For more information see www.hopetoun.co.uk.

Community centre's 'new lease of life'

A COMMUNITY centre in Leith has been refurbished.

Lorne Social Centre in Buchanan Street is run by Pilmeny Development Project as a centre for youth, community and older people's groups.

Port of Leith Housing Association (PoLHA) installed new flooring, kitchen equipment and toilet facilities. PoLHA chief executive Keith Anderson said: "This gives it a new lease of life."

Zoo to host Shriek Week

A RANGE of spooky treats is on offer to visitors at Edinburgh Zoo this week as part of the attraction's first ever Shriek Week.

The event features workshops and activities, and is taking place every day between 11am and 3.30pm until Sunday.
