Community centre unveils its new home

ONE of Scotland's first community centres is opening a new modern building, just a few streets away from its original home.

Cameron House Community Education Centre is opening the state-of-the-art new premises on the edge of Prestonfield Park.

The original centre was converted from a dilapidated mansion and opened by Sir Winston Churchill in 1931.

The city council has spent 2.5 million on the new building, which includes a large games hall and space for three basketball courts.

There is also a dance studio, a large multi-media room, an art room, a crche and a computer suite. Meeting rooms can be used by community groups, as well as for councillors' surgeries.

The centre will be expanding its programme of classes and events to make use of the new space. It will officially open next month.

Councillor Marilyne Maclaren, the city's education, children and families leader, said: "I know how important this centre is to the local community and I hope that everyone enjoys this wonderful new facility. Community education centres provide an integral part of the community, promoting inclusion and allowing young an old to participate in different projects and link in with one another."
