Comedy review: Shaggers
SHAGGERS *** LAUGHING HORSE @ MEADOW BAR (VENUE 264)
ONCE upon a Festival, American comic Andrew Lederer did a show called Anthology, where comics just told stories from their lives. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Lederer should be very flattered. Everyone from Assembly to the Free Fringe is telling stories now.
Shaggers is a jolly night and, as you might imagine, the stories on this night are of a sexual nature. 'Shaggy' dog stories – although without the dog. Or so I expected. Amazingly for a quartet of comics, the show was less 'shaggy' than many gigs around.
Compere Nik Coppin is an upbeat kind of guy and very good at his job. Of the four comics on the bill – Ashley Frieze, Neil Masters, Donald Mack and Bethany Black – it was Bethany Black, whose tale of her Great Valentine's Day Sex Disaster that best fulfilled the remit of the show as advertised.
She is an engaging performer with, luckily for the show, a fascinating sex life. The guys seemed to be doing more of a 'set' rather than telling tales.
