Colourist's 'lady in black' up for sale
SHE was photographed by Cecil Beaton for Vogue, graced millions of Irish banknotes and posed hundreds of times for her husband, the "Glasgow Boys" painter Sir John Lavery.
Now a portrait of the society beauty, model and artist Lady Hazel Lavery, by the Scottish Colourist FCB Cadell, goes on show in Edinburgh next week.
The Chicago-born Lady Lavery, daughter of an American industrialist, married Sir John in 1909. When the Irish Free State asked him to produce a female Irish face for its bank notes, he appeared to have based it closely on his wife.
Lady Lavery in Black by Cadell is a highlight of Sotheby's forthcoming sale of Scottish art.
Pictures show in the capital from 15-17 September at Mansfield Traquair before the London sale on 30 September.
